clos-ette case: Nicole Miller

Is there a woman out there who hasn’t worn and loved a Nicole Miller dress? The designer has been churning out modern, sexy, body-conscious frocks for over two decades, and has become the go-to girl for party wear in the process. So when VOGUE asked Clos-ette’s Melanie Fascitelli to co-host an exclusive preview for Miller’s spring/summer collection on Thursday night, she jumped at the chance to celebrate the iconic American designer. At the fashionista-packed fete, guests including Phillip Bloch, Colin Cowie, Amy Sacco, and fellow co-host Donna D’Cruz mingled over cocktails and admired the sleek new styles in Miller’s Soho boutique.

Before the bubbly started flowing and DJ Scott Durday began spinning tunes, we stole a few minutes with Miller herself to chat about her style and organizational know-how.

First, how do you define your personal style?

Eclectic. For example, today I am wearing my own pants and bag, with a Meadham Kirchhoff top, a Burberry jacket, Givenchy shoes and King Baby earrings.

How do you organize your closet?

I have jackets to the right, then blouses, dresses in the middle, and sportswear to the left, [with] like colors together so my closet looks ombre as the black fades to gray to ivory. I take digital Polaroids of all of my shoes and glue them to the outside of the box.  Otherwise, it's so easy to forget what's in there!

How do you store off-season clothes and other seldom-worn pieces?

I have a summer closet and a summer drawer which pretty much takes care of it.  Also, I have a vintage area.

When do you know it’s time to get rid of something?

I am a pack rat and if I get rid of something, I so often regret it unless it is worn out or itches.  I try to find a place for it.

What pieces will you keep forever?

My Azzedine Alaia leather coat, Claude Montana jacket, Maria Snyder beaded skirt, France Andrevie coat, and Rick Owens sweater –great designs I'll never part with.

What would we never find in your closet?

There are no flats in my shoe boxes.  They don't look good on me.

What are your must-haves for spring?

I am in the mood for cropped pants again, a long georgette skirt, vests of course, and loose georgette tops.

Your dresses are notoriously body-conscious. How do you dress for your own body type?

I like to think my clothes make everyone look 10 pounds thinner, me included.  I think they make everyone feel secure.

Everyone we know has had at least one amazing night in a Nicole Miller dress. What’s one of your favorite dress memories?

I wore a Zac Posen (who interned for me) dress to the CFDA Awards.  The dress fit me like a glove.  The color was perfect for me and I found the perfect shoes for it.
