Vogue contributing editor, front row fixture, and ‘best-dressed list’ regular –if anyone knows a thing or two about beautiful clothes, it’s Lauren Santo Domingo. Now, as co-founder and Creative Director of new online trunk show (Moda Operandi), the NYC-based fashion plate is granting mere mortals access to off-the-runway looks previously only available to insiders like herself. Launching this month, the site allows members to pre-order ready-to-wear clothes and accessories from designers like Proenza Schouler and Giambattista Valli, just 48 hours after they make their catwalk debuts.
clos-ette case: Lauren Santo Domingo
When it comes to her own super-chic wardrobe, Santo Domingo relies on clos-ette for her storage needs. She gave us a peek inside.
THE VIBEMy closet is very feminine –but still practical. But it is also a dual-purpose space. The clothes are behind closed doors, so I can still take meetings and have fittings in there. |

FAVORITE FEATUREMy jewelry drawer is a dream come true. I love to have everything visible. I think that women in their 20's look ridiculous in diamonds, and women in their 40's look silly in costume jewelry. So one’s 30's are the perfect time to wear both – preferably at the same time! I wear everything from Eddie Borgo to Buccellati! |
I am constantly changing my systems of organization. What works one year may not work the next. I enjoy re-organizing, and do an overhaul of my closet twice a year.
I give clothes up when they don't look nice. If you have worn something to death…sometimes one has to let it die. I give designer clothes to friends, and everything else goes to Housing Works. I store off-season pieces at Garde Robe.
I will keep my cocktail and evening dresses forever, because I plan to wear them all again someday. I don't believe in buying clothes to wear only once. I also love my many evening clutches, which I store in trays by color and size. They’re a mix of vintage and contemporary – lots of jeweled minaudières, beaded 20's pouches and skin clutches.
Nothing expires....It's just a question of knowing WHEN it's time to dust it off and wear it again. I am just starting to pull out all my vintage Prada from the late 90's. Five years ago one would call it irrelevant, but finally it's perfect for this spring!
Plan your schedule, then pack for each event or activity. I always pack books! Lots and lots of books. Right now, I’m reading a biography of Cleopatra.
