When it comes to costume jewelry, we will make practically any excuse to purchase just one more piece. Case in point: we’re justifying our inevitable Kendra Scott Jewelry spree with the fact that we’ve got a bevy of brand-new travel jewelry cases we simply must fill up. And really, who can blame us? The Texan jeweler’s chic, wearable designs come in such eye-popping hues, it’s impossible to pick which we like best. We’re talking pink agate earrings, lilac onyx cuffs, tigers eye statement necklaces, and a dozen other styles we’d pair with little white dresses all summer long. Here, the designer behind the fun and fabulous line chats with us about her favorite brands, best closet-cleaning tip, and run-in with a “fashion god.”
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is a mix of fashion-forward and timeless pieces, from vintage to current. I love mixing bright and beautiful colors with bold prints and textures to create one-of-a-kind looks. I always top off my ensembles with my jewelry, from brilliant colorful stone-centered jewels, to intricately etched metal pieces that truly add that “wow” factor to each look.
What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe?
There are several pieces from the 70’s and 80’s that my aunt, who was fashion director at a major department store, brought me back from her travels to shows in Milan and Paris. I love these vintage treasures. From an elegant white wool coat to a vintage Donna Karan red cashmere floor length sweater, I have so many pieces of hers that I cherish. She was the woman who first sparked my interest in fashion and who inspired me to become the woman I am today. So when I wear pieces she gifted me, I can feel that positive, powerful radiance of hers transfer to me.
What is your daily uniform?
Diane von Furstenberg, Rebecca Taylor, Catherine Malandrino and Rory Beca are my go-to brands for everyday, contemporary wear. I love the way they integrate patterns and textures and aren’t afraid to use bright splashes of color in their lines. As an accessories designer, it probably won’t come as a surprise that I’m also a shoe fanatic. Some of my favorite designers are Sergio Rossi and Brian Atwood because their shoes are both comfortable and beautiful. I am also absolutely obsessed with Gucci accessories, from their shoes and handbags, to their incredible hats. As for jewelry, I pile on ours every day to jazz up my outfits.
What's at the top of your summer shopping wish-list?
I am obsessing over mint green this season and I just purchased a pair of mint jeans that I can’t wait to wear! While they are great for spring, I think they will also be perfect for summer days when the A.C. is cranked up and it’s chilly in the office. I’m also on the hunt for a cute fedora to wear at the beach and can’t wait to shop for the perfect swimsuit. I’m loving the 1950’s throwback this season so I have my eye out for a bandeau top with a cute little skirted bottom.
What’s your best tip for closet organization?
Before every season, I edit my closet and if I haven’t worn a piece in a year, I take it out and toss it in a giant suitcase that I bring to the office for my girls to go through. We call it “Kendra’s Closet” and everyone draws a number and digs in. It is so fun to see all of the girls bring my clothes back to life in new and inventive ways. Sorting through my closet before every spring/summer and fall/winter season keeps my closet clean and organized, which makes it easy to get dressed in the morning!
What's your favorite fashion memory?
A few years back, a huge idol of mine, Oscar de la Renta, gave us the opportunity to have our jewelry compliment his runway looks. We didn’t even know if one piece would make it on the runway, and over 50 ended up being used! I was able to attend the show and it was an absolute surreal moment to see my designs accompany those of such a fashion god. I will never forget that memory.
Whose closet would you raid if you could?
Without any doubt, Carrie from Sex In The City. She has the most amazing, unique wardrobe and can pair the most unexpected pieces together and make them look fabulous! Her style epitomizes fun, fearless fashion, and I love that!
