Kate Somerville is best known as the skin expert to the stars (Jessica Alba et al) and founder of her eponymous line of ridiculously effective skin care products. But underneath her white aesthetician’s smock, this California girl has got her own chic bohemian style. Better yet? She houses her wardrobe in a seriously cool converted barn, complete with triple-height hanging, rustic woven storage baskets, and a Buddha figurine for good measure. Here, Somerville gives us a peek inside.
How would you describe your personal style?
Kind of hippy chic, but still a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. I love really loose cotton [pieces] with leather jackets and boots.
Who are your go-to designers?
I love Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg. One of my favorite brands is All Saints –I just love their leather goods.
What’s the most cherished item in your closet?
I have this All Saints leather jacket with brass rivets that I bought in London from their original store before they were here in the states. I literally walked into that store and was like, oh my God, I could buy everything here.
What’s your favorite splurge?
My number one biggest splurge would be really authentic Indian jewelry, like natural diamonds. And then my second is this amazing pair of handmade boots that I probably paid too much for. They’re from Italy –and so unique I can only wear them with certain things.
What’s your favorite fashion memory?
I was a freshman in high school and I got asked to the prom, but not by the guy that I liked. So I got this white dress –it was almost like a wedding dress, because it was the early ’80s –but it was really edgy for the time. And I just remember looking so hot that night, and the guy that I really liked was checking me out all night. It was good fashion revenge!
What would we never find in your closet?
Pantyhose.
What’s your ‘closet personality’?
I am so organized. If I don’t wear it, I get rid of it. My closet is immaculate! It has to be, because I’m on air so much that I have to be able to get to things kind of quickly. I have a stylist that styles me, and so when she comes up to my house, it’s like a store –she can just get what she needs.
Who is your style icon?
You’re going to laugh, but it’s Barbara Streisand in “A Star is Born.” Literally, I wish I could be her in that movie.Next →
