clos-ette case: SUITE NY's Kris Fuchs

As a principal at SUITE New York, the modern design showroom, Kris Fuchs knows a thing or two about drop-dead-cool decor. So it's no surprise that every inch of her Upper East Side home is striking –especially, we think, her walk-in closet. The sleek, mirrored space is a genius blend of high design (see: a Louise Bourgeois sculpture; custom circular door handles) and high function (said mirrors swing open to reveal a home for every top, pant, and pair of sky-high pumps). Here, she gives us a peek inside her modern masterpiece.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style has always been more about comfort than specific designers. It’s usually a mix of soft fabrics in classic silhouettes with something edgy and unexpected. I love to be feminine and dress up, but never like to sacrifice comfort. 

What was inspiration behind your gorgeous closet?

I always loved the style of Christian Dior boutiques and the look of the now-closed department store Takashimaya. I took elements from both and created my closets. Nanz custom-fitted the circular brushed stainless door handles. 

I never like to come home to a mess, so I wanted a dressing room and closet where I was able to open all the doors and tear through it all to get dressed in a hurry, but not have to clean up right away. I can close off the door and deal with it later.

Lastly, lighting is very important to me. The ceiling lights in a way that illuminates everything evenly and true to color.

How do you keep it looking so fab?

I love Clos-ette Too hangers because they are thin! My closets holds so much because of them, and I love the non-slip material for all my silky items. Also, I remove and store off-season items so my closet is organized with key pieces. 

What designers can't you live without?

I love Zero+Maria Cornejo for her colors and her loosely fitted dresses that always show a little leg. I love Acme and All Saints, and throwing in some Roland Mouret and Rick Owens for fun.

What’s your favorite splurge?

My biggest spurge has and always will be shoes, glorious shoes. I favor booties, stilettos, and pumps –from Frye boots to Brian Atwood. When designing my closet, my architect David Mann asked me for a count of about how many shoes and boots I had. After counting, I was too embarrassed to call him.

What’s the most cherished item in your closet?

I have some amazing original Prada and Jil Sander pieces that I have had for over 18 years. Some are a little tight now, but I still treasure them. 

What do you tend to collect?

Lingerie, hands down. I hang everything because some pieces can be worn with jeans or dresses –the camis, nighties and so on. My all-time favorite is La Perla. I shop there seasonally, just like I do with fashion. My boyfriend doesn’t mind a shopping trip there.

Whose closet would you love to raid?

I would have to say it would be two people: Stevie Nicks and Lorraine Kirke, owner of Geminola.
