clos-ette case: Tory Burch

Posted on March 14, 2011 by Melanie Charlton

Tory Burch is a woman who knows what she likes –and judging by the success of her eponymous label, she knows what legions of other women like too. As the Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director of the Tory Burch brand, she’s built a veritable fashion empire off her taste in classic American sportswear with a twist of retro, jet-set luxe. This distinct aesthetic drives everything from the label’s fresh ready-to-wear collection (think sophisticated shirt-dresses, sequined tees, and signature tunics in bold hues like poppy red) to its line of statement-making jewelry, shoes and handbags. Burch’s super-chic boutiques not only create the perfect backdrop for these fashions –the Greenwich, Dallas and Chicago outposts also hosted book launch parties Clos-ette’s “Shop Your Closet” in 2008!

When it comes to Burch’s own Manhattan closet, it’s no surprise the space oozes style. We asked the busy designer to give us a peek inside.

What was the inspiration behind your closet?

I wanted a room that was very peaceful and light. The right lighting is so important.

How do you keep it organized?

There is a packing table with drawers underneath to keep everything organized. I collect some vintage pieces and try to keep them in garment bags.

Your stores are so beautifully merchandised. How do you apply the fundamentals of merchandising to your own closet?

Our boutiques are usually merchandised by season and story, but my closet is organized by category and style—it’s more practical day to day.

How would you define your personal style?

Classic but eclectic.

What’s your ideal shopping day?

Anywhere with my stepdaughters and mother. They are so much fun to shop with and all have great style.

How does your mother’s closet inspire you?

My mother is a constant source of design inspiration. Our gold lamé blouse and sunflower foundation earrings from spring were both inspired by pieces my mother wore.

What is your favorite investment piece?

Everyone should have a great winter coat that’s chic and goes with everything. My favorite is by Celine.

What are you looking forward to wearing this spring?

After wearing many layers this winter, I’m looking forward to simplifying things for spring. I can’t wait to wear our Tab Front Super Skinny Jean, a floral Erdem dress and Jil Sander skirt.

I can never have too many….

Shoes.
