clos-ette case: Jesse Carrier & Mara Miller

Posted on December 15, 2011 by Melanie Charlton

What's better than an invitation to design a closet for Hearst’s Designer Vision Showhouse? When that invitation comes from Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller of Carrier and Company. The husband-and-wife team are among our favorite collaborators –and serious favorites of the fashion world as well (clients include Jason Wu and a certain Ms. Anna Wintour). For their showhouse appartment, the duo took inspiration from the film Igby Goes Down and decked out an Upper East Side pad in the perfect blend of bohemian-meets-uptown chic (which, of course, extends to the custom Clos-ette closets). Don’t miss a lovely feature on the space in this month’s Town & Country!

Here, we chat with Mara –who, along with her husband, was recently named to Architecture Digest’s “New AD 100" list –to get the scoop on their spot-on style.

What's your daily uniform?

Jesse and I both gravitate to updated classics for everyday. In a single day it’s not unusual for us to be at a construction site, a metal shop, a classic six, and then an industry cocktail party, so we tend towards simple and wearable things.

Such as?

I wear a lot of Michael Kors, Vince, Theory and Diane von Furstenberg every day. I love to mix in Marni and Dries Van Noten for glamour and edge, and Jason Wu (a favorite client) when I want to feel beautiful. Jesse’s uniform is jeans with loafers and a pressed shirt. [Our Signature Shirt Hangers are a must-have for everything from basic button-downs to big-time designers.)

What would your dream closet look like?

We love the closet designed by Clos-ette for the Town & Country show house. It was a great collaboration! We wrapped every surface in a beautiful pale aquamarine grass cloth with silver thread. It made the closet interiors look luxurious and refined, and the natural quality of grass cloth kept it from feeling over done. Melanie also introduced us to Lucite hanging rods –they are so chic! It’s another great way to enjoy an unexpected luxury every day. We just purchased this mid-century Lucite chandelier for a client’s dressing room. It’s a great little fixture of bent Lucite rods that are in overlapping layers –it is sparkly and tailored. I want one, too!

What’s the most cherished thing in your closet?
I have a vintage silver hard-case metal clutch from the

1940’s

that was my
Nana’s. I love that it is a way to still share my life with her.

What about Jesse’s can’t-live-without item?
His absolutely favorite thing are his Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses! He has a few pairs and loves the mix of the vintage shape with their fashion-forward materials and colors. We keep a pair of the folding frames in the car, just in case he forgets them.

Whose closet would you like to raid?

We’ve had the privilege of peeking into Anna Wintour’s closet and it is, of course, impeccable! She defines what is fashionable, and has created an iconic personal style. She is the ultimate editor!

Anything in particular you had your eye on?

We’ve already incorporated her example of buying multiples of a great item –whatever works is more important than just having more. That lesson was much more impactful than pilfering one amazing piece of couture!
