clos-ette case: Julianne Moore

Posted on December 22, 2011 by Melanie Charlton

It’s hard to imagine Julianne Moore as anything other than a bona fide red carpet babe, but back in her playground days, the Academy Award nominee was better known as “freckleface strawberry.” This nickname is precisely the inspiration behind her series of oh-so-charming children’s books –which are, we assure you, the sweetest and funniest stories we’ve encountered.  Earlier this month, our own Melanie Fascitelli joined forces with co-hosts Lauren Santo Domingo, Celerie Kemble, and Cristina Greeven Cuomo to fete the actress-turned-author on the occasion of her third title, Freckleface Strawberry Best Friends Forever. Naturally, we scooped up copies for every little friend we know –and stole a few moments with the mother of two to chat about her most cherished belongings, pack-rat tendencies, and favorite fashion memory.

How would you describe your personal style?

Hmmm. Very casual –and a little erratic. Tom Ford says every actress he knows has two styles: yoga clothes and evening wear.

What’s the most cherished item in your closet?

I have a photograph of myself and my sister when we were four and three, holding hands on the beach.  We were in Panama and wearing the matching terry cloth beach robes my mother made us. Mine is blue and my sister’s is pink.

And the most cherished book on your bookshelves?

Probably my torn up copy of Little Women. I read it so many times as a kid that it split in two, but I have carried it around with me everywhere I’ve lived.

What’s your daily uniform?

J Brand jeans, an Isabel Marant top,  and No 6 clog boots.

What’s the coziest thing in your closet?

My Free City sweatpants.

What’s your favorite sartorial memory from childhood?

My mother had a suede coat with a mink collar. I used to stand behind her in the car (in the days before seat belts) and stroke the collar.

Are you at all a packrat?

I hang onto things until I can no longer remember why I liked them –then I throw them all out.  I fantasize about throwing out everything right away, but it always takes  me a few years to get there.

If you could raid the closet of any literary character, whose would you raid?

Clothes are always better in movies than in books.  I very much doubt that Isak Dineson was as well dressed in Africa as Meryl Streep was in the movie.
