clos-ette case: Miguelina Gambaccini

Posted on April 23, 2012 by Melanie Charlton

As organizational fiends and frequent travelers, we’ve pretty much mastered the art of perfect packing. One rule of thumb: if we’re heading anywhere with a beach or a pool, a gorgeous Miguelina cover-up is coming with us. Why? Because our friend Miguelina Gambaccini’s luxe resort-wear line –think lacy tunics, ethereal caftans, and vibrant silk crepe maxi dresses –is as chic as it is versatile. These are pieces you can truly wear a gazillion different ways (trust us, we know from experience). Here, the Dominican-born designer opens up the doors to her personal closet to share her most treasured belongings, favorite accessories, and her own organizational how-to.

How would you describe your personal style?

It is effortless, eclectic and always inspired by the places I travel. I don’t like to use the word "bohemian" because it’s overused, so I would say that I’m glamorous in a very laidback way. I’m always kind of romantic.

What’s your daily uniform?

I always have something lacy on, like lace shorts or a lace top. I like to mix my things with J. Crew, and I love to wear Yves Saint Laurent and Rag and Bone.

What inspires your collections?

I get inspired from my travels. My collection is about easy pieces that you can wear on your trip from morning to evening.

How do you like to accessorize?

Right now, I am loving these colorful necklaces from my friend Ariela Suster’s line, Sequence Collection, which is made in El Salvador. I’ve been wearing the necklaces with my white pieces. I also love bags from Dea Rosa. And I’m dying for the new cage bag from Anndra Neen!

What are your most cherished pieces?

There are so many things! I could never give away my old YSL pieces or my Chanel bags. And I will always keep my Brian Atwood shoes.

How do you organize your closet?

I’m really organized, but you know what helps me a lot? I keep a closet just for my summer and travel clothes. So every time I come back from a trip, all the things that I travel with go back to that closet.  And then I have clear boxes for all my bathing suits, all my scarves, etc. I have to see everything, otherwise I don’t wear it.

What’s the most embarrassing thing in your closet?

Oh my gosh, I have this ridiculous Moschino bathing suit that I’ve practically been wearing since my twenties. It is so old and kind of dorky, but I still love it. It’s the most comfortable thing. I even tried to come out with something to replace it because I love it so much.

Whose closet would I like to raid?

I would raid the Albright Fashion Library [formerly Imelda’s Closet] in New York. They collect all the couture pieces –you can find like 20 years of couture pieces. They have the most amazing things!
